Afghan Govt. Discusses Prisoner Release Matter with Taliban


Mar. 23/2020 – Following the peace step of the US, the Afghanistan Government started discussions with Taliban on the release of prisoners. The release of Taliban prisoners was a major point during the agreement signed between the US and the rebel group in February. 

Taking to their Twitter handles separately, US special envoy for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad and Taliban spokesperson Suhail Shaheen confirmed the developments. 

Khalilzad stated that exchange of prisoners would be given much importance to encourage the peace process. On the other hand Shaheen clarified that in addition to prisoners release other issues had been discussed during the talks. 

On February 29, the Taliban and the USA had entered into an agreement under which the the latter would curtail its troop counts from over 12,000 to 8,000 gradually this year.
